Rooted in Action: Birthworkers on the Frontlines of Climate and Reproductive Justice

On May 27th, 2PM EST, this session takes a deeper look at two community-driven models integrating climate preparedness into birthwork. Zainab Jah of Woven shares the development and findings of the Sierra Leone Maternal and Child Health Climate Literacy Tool, a community-informed resource designed to educate pregnant people and providers about the health impacts of extreme heat. Aver Yakubu of Nurturely shares insights from their program, Wombs and Wildfires, including a collaborative report with Human Rights Watch on wildfires and reproductive health in Oregon, centering the experiences of doulas and community health workers on the frontlines of environmental crisis. Together, these models illustrate how birthworkers can serve as trusted advocates and first responders, and how community-rooted tools can advance reproductive and climate justice transnationally.
 
Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the impacts of climate events on maternal and newborn health across diverse global and local contexts
  • Describe how wildfire smoke exposure creates barriers to care and disproportionately harms marginalized pregnant people
  • Identify the specific climate-related health challenges facing pregnant people in Sierra Leone, including the role of extreme heat, unpaid care work, and limited access to resources

  • Describe the relationship between toxic environmental exposures and maternal, reproductive, and perinatal health outcomes.
  • Examine the impact of environmental racism, reproductive justice, and systemic inequities on exposure risk among Black birthing communities and other marginalized populations.
  • Evaluate evidence-based strategies and safer alternatives for reducing toxic exposures during preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, and infancy.

Foundations of Black Maternal Health Practice: Reconnecting Environment, Culture, and Care

On Friday, November 7th at 3PM EST, Angela D. Aina’s session will establish a foundational understanding of Black Maternal Health Practice as a distinctive branch of maternal and child health work. This practice recognizes how people of African descent have long understood childbearing, maternity care, and reproductive health as inseparable from our connection to the land, water, air, food, and the natural and spiritual world—our ecosystem. Join us as we kick off BMMA’s 2025 Fall Perinatal Learning Series and ground together in holistic, justice-centered care.

  • Describe Black Maternal Health Practice as a distinctive approach that integrates multiple conceptual frameworks with cultural practices and ecological knowledge.

On Monday, November 10th at 1PM EST, Black women and birthing people are often overexposed to pollution and under protected from environmental harm. This session led by BWW-LA's Tianna Shaw Wakeman, explores how environmental racism and reproductive justice intersect. This session also includes an optional follow-up technical assistance session December 2nd at 2PM EST.

Reproductive Resilience: Understanding the Impact of Toxins on Maternal and Neonatal Health

On Wednesday, November 12th at 2PM EST, this session will build on the capacity of birth workers and health professionals to understand and address the disproportionate impact of reproductive toxins on maternal, reproductive, and neonatal health. Young, Gifted and Green’s founder, LaTricea D. Adams will explore how environmental and reproductive justice intersect with birth work, and provide you with tools to advocate for healthier pregnancies and birth outcomes in Black communities. 

Objectives

  • Participants will be able to define reproductive toxins and identify common sources of exposure in Black communities.
  • Participants will be able to explain the pathways through which reproductive toxins impact reproductive health, maternal health, and neonatal health, with specific attention to disparities affecting Black individuals.
  • Participants will be able to describe the intersection of environmental racism and reproductive health disparities.
  • Participants will be able to identify strategies for reducing exposure to reproductive toxins at the individual, family, and community levels.

Participants will explore how environmental and reproductive justice intersect with consumer rights, gaining tools to educate communities, advocate for safer policies, and protect maternal and child health. This session also includes an optional follow-up technical assistance session December 2nd at 10AM EST.

  • Explain how exposure to reprotoxins and harmful substances impacts perinatal and maternal health outcomes.
